Our Guide to Star Wars Saga* stories (Lucasfilm Story Group approved stories)

[]

Prior to Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in October 2012 the canonical structure of Star Wars story-telling was hierarchical in nature. A structure that placed George Lucas's vision (the live-action films, The Clone Wars animated film and TV series) above material from the Expanded Universe (novels, comics, etc). While this meant that Expanded Universe stories could not contradict Lucas's stories, the opposite wasn't true - never more so when the release of The Clone Wars film in 2008 clashed heavily with previously published Clone Wars stories. So, with Lucas no longer in overall control, Disney/Lucasfilm created their Story Group in 2013. Its purpose is to create and manage a unified approach to Star Wars story-telling: in effect creating a single canon where any story could not be contradicted by another and each story was important as any other, regardless of medium or writer.
Following the announcement that Episode VII would be set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, on 25th April 2014 Lucasfilm and the Story Group announced that going forward all previous Expanded Universe material would now be relabeled as Star Wars Legends, effectively asserting that Expanded Universe stories may or may not have happened within the Star Wars universe and the only official continuity would be stories/material approved by the Story Group.

This page lists Story Group approved in-continuity stories: films, TV series, novels, books and comics (it excludes short stories which can be found on our Star Wars Saga Timeline), in chronological order. It should be noted that where a story is available in multiple formats, such as video, novel and comic formats, only the most recent video release is the approved canonical version. Thus for Episodes I thru VI which have all had multiple theatrical, VHS, DVD and Blu-ray releases as well as a myriad of novel and comic adaptations published, the approved canonical edition is the Blu-ray edition first published in 2011 (subsequently re-released in 2013 and 2015). Note that for novel and comic adaptations of any film or TV episode only the scenes/dialogue which align to that seen on screen are canon, the rest of the adaptation is classed as Legends.
