Star Wars Legends Timeline |
|
![[]](../images/spacer15.gif) |
|
Every Star Wars
Legends story, whether novel, comic or short story was written with a sense of
continuity, i.e. events that have occurred at a particular time
cannot be described in stories set prior to those events, e.g. Luke
discovers that Vader is his father in The Empire Strikes Back,
thus in all stories written prior to this event Luke must be
ignorant of this. Therefore events within the Star Wars
Legends galaxy, like
our own, must follow a temporal linearity even if story publishing
didn't.
This
timeline includes novels, comics, short stories and other published
stories that formed the main part of the Star Wars
Legends continuity - it excludes very young reader books and the
self-titled adventure style books. It is divided into the seven Eras
of Adventure: Before The
Republic, The Old Republic,
Rise of the Empire, The
Rebellion, The New
Republic, The New
Jedi Order; and Legacy of the
Force.
For
Legends stories set during The Clone Wars
period, there are now two Legends
timelines: the first is for
The Clone Wars film and TV series and its accompanying
tie-in novels and comics. The second is
for original Clone Wars material published circa 2002 - 2007, i.e. stories published prior to the 2008 The Clone Wars film and
six season TV series. The reason for two timelines is because when the
latter stories were originally
published between 2002 and 2007 they formed a single coherent timeline.
However when The Clone Wars film and TV series started in
2008 attempts to
incorporate it and the accompanying tie-in
novels and
comic stories
into the pre-existing Clone Wars timeline proved difficult. Following the
Legends announcement of
25th April 2014
the necessity to incorporate the two timelines into one now seemed
irrelevant. It should be noted that the status of The Clone Wars
film and TV series is unique as it belongs to both the
Star Wars Saga* (canon) and
Legends universes. This also means that while tie-in
material published between 2008-2013 (novels and
comics) are Legends
only, material published post-2014 (those based on unaired scripts
such as the
Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir comic story and
Dark
Disciple novel) are
part of both the Star Wars Saga* and
Legends universes.

The Eras of
Adventure:
Star Wars Legends stories cover a timeframe that stretches back to 25,000
years before the Battle of Yavin and up to 140 years after it, so to
make it easier to place a story's chronological setting, LucasBooks
introduced five Eras of Adventure in 2000: The Old
Republic, Rise of the Empire, The
Rebellion, The New Republic and The New
Jedi Order. A sixth, Legacy of the Force, was
added in 2006 and a seventh, Before The Republic,
was created in 2012 to accommodate the new
Dawn of the Jedi comic and
novel series.
Now every Legends story, whether book, comic, short story or other,
could be placed as occurring during one of seven Eras of Adventure.
Thus the events of the Prequel Trilogy (Episodes I thru III) occur
during the Rise of the Empire era, while the Original
Trilogy (Episodes IV thru VI) take place in The Rebellion
era.
Note that for convenience Before The
Republic is encapsulated within The
Old Republic era timeline.

The Old Republic
Events
occurring up to 67 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Old Republic was the legendary government that united a
galaxy under the rule of the senate. In this era, the Jedi are
numerous, and serve as guardians of peace and justice. Includes the
Dawn of the Jedi
comic book and novel series of the Before The Republic
era.

Rise of the Empire
Events
occurring between 67 years and 2 years before the
Battle of Yavin
After the seemingly final defeat of the Sith, the Republic
enters a state of complacency. In the waning years of the
Republic, the senate was rife with corruption and scandal, and
saddled with a bureaucracy so immense that effective governing
was nearly impossible. The ambitious Senator Palpatine caused
himself to be elected Supreme Chancellor, and promised to
reunite the galaxy under a New Order.

The Rebellion
Events
occurring between 2 years before and 5 years after the Battle of Yavin
An outcry of resistance begins to spread across
the galaxy in protest to the new Empire's tyranny. Cells of
Rebellion fight back, and the Galactic Civil War begins.
This era begins with the formal declaration of the birth of
the Rebel Alliance on Corellia and Kashyyyk and ends a year
after the death of the Emperor high over the forest moon of
Endor. The Rebellion starts to reform itself into a body of
government, first as the Alliance of Free Planets, and later
the New Republic.

The New Republic
Events
occurring between 5 and 25 years after the Battle of Yavin
Having defeated the Empire at the Battle of Endor, the Rebel
Alliance must now transform itself from a militant resistance
force into a functioning galactic government. As Imperial
territory is reclaimed, the New Republic suffers growing
pains, having to fend off insurrections, Imperial loyalists
and wayward warlords. Luke Skywalker, the last of the Jedi,
begins training apprentices and rebuilding the Jedi order.

|
New Jedi Order
Events
occurring between 25 and 40 years after the Battle of Yavin
The Jedi Knights are now a hundred strong. The New Republic
has signed a peace treaty with what little remains of the
Empire. The galaxy is finally enjoying a peaceful respite from
decades of war. It's at this time that a horrible alien menace
invades the Republic from beyond known space. The Yuuzhan Vong
lay waste to entire worlds in their scourge of the galaxy.

![[ Legacy of the Force ]](images/legacy.jpg) |
|
Legacy of the Force
Events
occurring 40 years after the Battle of Yavin
This is the era of Luke Skywalker's legacy: the Jedi Master
has unified the order into a cohesive group of powerful Jedi
Knights. But as the new era begins, planetary interests
threaten to disrupt this time of relative peace, and Luke is
plagued with visions of an approaching darkness. Evil is
rising again and it looks as if the legacy of the Skywalkers
may come full circle.
Both the Fate of the Jedi
novels and Legacy
comic book series occur during this era.

|
The Clone Wars
Events
occurring between 22 and 19 years before the Battle of Yavin
Chronicles events occurring between
Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith
only. Failure to incorporate original Clone wars material published
circa 2002-2007 and that published 2008-2013 as part of
The Clone Wars animated film and six season TV series
into one cohesive timeline,
means that there are currently two Legends timelines for the
Clone Wars era. The first is for
original material published circa 2002-2007, the
second is for The Clone Wars film, TV series
and accompanying tie-in books and comics.
