Travelling across the Jundland Wastes, Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi, along with the droids C-3PO and R2-D2, are distracted from their journey to Mos Eisley when they hear a high-pitched scream. Investigating its source, Luke and Obi-Wan encounter a fight between some Jawas and Tusken Raiders. Caught in the middle of the firefight, and the source of the scream, is a young girl cowering behind an overturned landspeeder. Recognising the child as the daughter of a local moisture farmer, Obi-Wan successfully rescues the girl.
Returning the child to her parents, Obi-Wan begins to question the reasons for the Jawa's and Tusken's attack on the girl. He noticed that the attack occured at a place where normally both tribes people would have harvested a fruit plant, hubba gourds.
Excusing himself so that he could wash the dust off, Obi-Wan spots a gourd husk on the homestead's floor. Investigating further he discovers a room full of hubba gourds! When the farmer confronts Obi-Wan, the Jedi correctly ascertains that the farmer had stolen the fruit in order to engineer a war between the two tribes so that he could expand his farm. When the farmer draws his blaster on Obi-Wan, Luke rushes in slicing the pistol in half with his father's old lightsaber.
Before anything else can happen the Jawas and Tuskens attack the homestead, but Obi-Wan has a solution to their dilemma. He appeases the attackers by using the Force to hurl the stolen hubba gourds towards them. Although unable to punish the farmer himself, Obi-Wan understands that the disapproval of the farmer's family towards him will be punishment enough.
Luke, Obi-Wan and the droids continue on their journey to Mos Eisley.

This story occurs before the Battle of Yavin, during the events of A New Hope.
