This book contains the following stories:

  • Mercy Mission by Melissa Scott
Years before she led the crew of the Ghost, Hera Syndulla was a young pilot looking to make a difference in the galaxy. Hera sets out with Goll — a close ally of her father, Cham Syndulla — on a dangerous mission to help the citizens of her homeworld, Ryloth, now languishing under the might of the Empire.
This story occurs approximately 14 years before Episode IV: A New Hope.
  • Tarkin by James Luceno
Under Governor Wilhuff Tarkin’s guidance, an ultimate weapon of unparalleled destruction—the so-called Death Star—moves ever closer to becoming a terrifying reality. Until then, insurgency remains a genuine threat. Guerrilla attacks by an elusive band of freedom fighters must be countered with swift and brutal action—a mission the Emperor entrusts to his most formidable agents: Darth Vader, the fearsome new Sith enforcer, and Tarkin, whose tactical cunning and cold-blooded efficiency will pave the way for the Empire’s supremacy—and its enemies’ extinction.
This story occurs approximately 14 years before Episode IV: A New Hope.
  • Bottleneck by John Jackson Miller
When Grand Moff Tarkin is tasked by Emperor Palpatine to investigate a dispute slowing Imperial production on a backwater planet, he expects an easy mission. Instead, Tarkin must forge a tense alliance with Count Vidian, the Empire’s newest rising star and a most capable rival. Matching wits and risking betrayal at every turn, the two powerful Imperials duel to gain the upper hand…and elude, at all costs, the price of failure.
This story occurs between 14 and 11 years before Episode IV: A New Hope.
  • A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller
Ever since the Jedi were marked for death, Kanan Jarrus has devoted himself to staying alive rather than serving the Force. So when he discovers a conflict brewing between Imperial forces and desperate revolutionaries, he’s not about to get caught in the crossfire. Then the brutal death of a friend forces him to choose between bowing down to fear or standing up to fight. But Jarrus won’t be fighting alone. Soon he is joined by Hera Syndulla—a mysterious agent provocateur with motives of her own—in challenging the Empire for the sake of a world and its people.
This story occurs approximately 11 years before Episode IV: A New Hope.
  • The Levers of Power by Jason Fry
As Imperial and Rebel forces clash on and above the Forest Moon of Endor, Admiral Rae Sloane commands from the bridge of the Star Destroyer Vigilance. At a time where the stakes could not be higher, Sloane works to protect the Death Star and ensure Imperial victory, all too aware of the uncertain future for the Empire that may lie in the aftermath of the battle.
This story occurs approximately 4 years after Episode IV: A New Hope, during the Battle of Endor.

These stories occur between 14 years before and 4 years after Episode IV: A New Hope.

Review by Darth Kondorr, Poland, 2016:

Mercy Mission:
Although it was a pleasant read, I got confused with the amount of new characters, who did not really get proper introductions, they just were, as if this was the middle part of a tale, when proper introductions are no longer needed.
Mercy Mission is equally an epilogue to Lords of the Sith and prologue to A New Dawn, showing us some of the repercussions after what happened in the previous book, as well as introducing us to a major character in the making, the daughter to Cham Syndulla, the Ghost's future captain: Hera Syndulla.
It is a nice read if you have it and if you have read Lords of the Sith recently (or are a die hard Hera fan), but other than that, it is rather skippable.

Rating: 3 / 5
